A missed EMI: reconstruct the payment timeline before disputing it

When a payment appears late, the relevant timeline includes the due date, debit attempt, successful receipt and account posting. Reconstruct those events before deciding whether a credit-report entry is inaccurate.

Gather transaction-level evidence

Find the repayment schedule, bank debit or return record, payment receipt and the lender's statement. A transfer initiated on a due date is not necessarily the same as funds received and applied that day. Ask the lender to explain the posting and reported status. If there is an error, dispute the specific dates and entry with evidence. If the delay is accurate, request options for addressing the underlying repayment difficulty.

A worked situation

A failed automatic debit followed by a successful manual payment several days later involves two separate events. The later receipt should be recorded, but it does not automatically establish that the original due-date obligation was met on time.

Your next-step checklist

  • Identify the contractual due date
  • Match successful receipt to account posting
  • Keep lender explanations and dispute references

Can an accurate late payment be removed for a fee?

Be cautious of that promise. A correction process addresses inaccurate information. It should not be presented as a guaranteed way to erase an accurate repayment history.
