An unfamiliar loan on your credit report: build an evidence-led dispute
An account you do not recognise deserves prompt investigation. Start by identifying the exact entry and preserving the report, then use official channels to establish whether it is a data error or possible misuse.

Avoid changing the evidence
Save the dated report, lender name, masked account reference, reported balance and status. Contact the lender through independently verified details and raise a bureau dispute for the specific entry. Keep complaint numbers and responses together. Do not post the full report, PAN or other identity details on public forums in search of help. If fraud is suspected, follow the appropriate official reporting process as well.
A worked situation
A report may list a lender whose legal name differs from the app used for a genuine loan. That possibility should be checked, but it should not be used to dismiss an unfamiliar account without evidence. Match the account to an actual agreement or investigate it formally.
Your next-step checklist
- Preserve the dated report and exact disputed entry
- Verify contact details independently
- Keep a timeline of acknowledgements and responses
Should I pay an unknown account to make it disappear?
Do not make an unexplained payment merely to remove a report entry. First establish the account's identity and the appropriate correction or fraud-resolution process through official channels.
