Outstanding-balance and foreclosure letters: which figure should you use?

An outstanding principal balance and a dated foreclosure amount serve different purposes. Confusing them can leave a transfer payment short or make an EMI comparison inaccurate.

Read the purpose and validity date

The principal balance helps model future interest. A foreclosure quote estimates what is required to close the account on its stated date, potentially including accrued amounts or disclosed charges. Ask the lender to explain each line and how the quote changes if payment arrives later. Do not treat an old app screenshot as a current settlement instruction.

A worked situation

An illustrative statement may show ₹4 lakh principal, while the dated closure quote is ₹4.04 lakh after accrued amounts and stated charges. A new lender sending only ₹4 lakh may not complete closure. Conversely, using ₹4.04 lakh as principal in every comparison can hide what portion is actually a switching cost.

Your next-step checklist

  • Record the quote's validity date
  • Separate principal from accrued amounts and fees
  • Confirm the lender's accepted closure process

Is an account screenshot sufficient for transfer?

The receiving lender may require specific documents and a current closure quote. Ask both lenders which document, date and payment instructions they need before arranging settlement.
