Fixed versus floating personal-loan rates: compare the mechanism
A rate label describes how interest may behave over time, not the entire cost of a loan. Before choosing between fixed and floating structures, understand what can change and how that change reaches your repayment schedule.

Ask what is fixed and for how long
For a fixed structure, confirm the period covered and whether any later reset is possible. For a floating structure, identify the benchmark, spread and reset process in the agreement. Ask whether a rate movement changes EMI, tenure or both. Compare costs and exit conditions separately. Do not assume that a fixed rate guarantees the lowest total payment, or that a floating rate must fall in the future.
A worked situation
Two illustrative offers may start with the same ₹10,000 EMI. One could retain its rate for the stated fixed period while the other changes at a contractual reset. A sensible comparison includes a higher-rate scenario for the floating offer rather than relying only on today's schedule.
Your next-step checklist
- Record the rate type in writing
- Ask for the reset and communication process
- Compare repayment under more than one rate scenario
Should I predict the next rate cut?
A borrowing decision should remain workable if the expected movement does not happen. Use the contract and a stress-tested budget rather than a forecast alone.
