Top-up or fresh loan? Compare the whole borrowing need

Separate the cost of switching your existing balance from the cost of extra funds.
Define the extra amount first
Write down what the additional funds are for and how much you actually need. A top-up adds to your borrowing; it does not reduce what you owe simply because it is offered alongside a transfer.
Compare like with like
Compare keeping your existing loan plus a separate fresh loan against transferring the existing balance with a top-up. Keep the extra amount and repayment timeline comparable. Include fees on every part of each option.
Look at the combined commitment
Add all monthly payments under each option and compare total repayment. A consolidated payment may be easier to track, but convenience alone does not establish that the borrowing costs less. Check whether any proposed security changes what is at risk.
Read before accepting
Ask for the sanctioned amounts, net disbursal, rate, tenure and full charges in writing. Confirm whether any deductions reduce the money you actually receive. Choose based on affordability and purpose, rather than the largest amount available.
Compare three structures for the same additional cash need
A top-up and a fresh loan may deliver the same extra cash through different structures. First establish whether the top-up sits alongside your existing account, changes that account or replaces it. Then compare keeping the current debt plus a new facility with any combined refinancing proposal.
Use the net additional amount received as the common starting point. List the existing balance, new principal, fees, tenure and every monthly obligation for each scenario. If one proposal extends the repayment of old debt, show that effect separately instead of attributing the whole EMI reduction to a better rate.
For illustration, a ₹1 lakh extra requirement should be compared using ₹1 lakh of usable funds, not a headline sanction that includes deductions or repayment of old debt. Check the total cost and household cash burden across the full schedule. Security, lender conditions and flexibility can matter as much as the calculated EMI.
| Scenario | Existing borrowing | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Separate new loan | Remains unchanged | Combined EMIs and costs of the new facility |
| Top-up alongside existing loan | May remain in place | Separate terms and total obligations |
| Transfer plus top-up | Old balance is replaced | Moving costs and repayment on the combined principal |
How does the Credswitch enquiry capture this?
Choose the relevant loan type and Top-up / additional loan, then explain your existing loans in the financial profile. The current calculator's transfer-plus-top-up mode models combined refinancing; it does not represent every standalone top-up structure.
