Avoid missed or duplicate EMIs during a loan transfer

A balance transfer creates an overlap period in which the old loan may still be active while the new one is being set up. Plan the dates explicitly so an assumption about closure does not cause a missed payment.

Build a dated handover sheet

Record the old EMI due date, proposed settlement date, quote expiry, new disbursal date and first new EMI. Ask when the old debit mandate should be changed and how any excess collection will be reconciled. Do not cancel a repayment instruction simply because a transfer has been approved. Keep written acknowledgements and verify account status after funds are received.

A worked situation

If the old EMI is due on the 5th and settlement is expected on the 7th, assume the old payment still needs attention until the lender confirms otherwise. Any amount paid during the overlap must be reflected in the final reconciliation, not ignored in your comparison.

Your next-step checklist

  • Confirm both lenders' payment dates
  • Keep a temporary overlap buffer
  • Reconcile any extra collection in writing

Can I stop the old EMI once the new loan is sanctioned?

Sanction alone does not confirm settlement. Ask the current lender how repayments should continue until the account is formally closed and the collection arrangement is updated.
