After a balance transfer: the first three statements to reconcile

The transfer is not administratively finished just because a new EMI starts. Reconcile the old account, the new opening balance and the reporting trail so incomplete closure does not remain unnoticed.

Keep the handover evidence together

Retain the settlement proof, old lender's closure acknowledgement and new repayment schedule. Compare the old lender's final statement with the settlement quote, and the new lender's first statement with the sanctioned amount and deductions. Then check subsequent records for unexpected debits or balances. If something differs, ask the relevant lender to explain the specific transaction rather than raising a vague complaint.

A worked situation

A final old-loan statement might show a small residual amount because settlement reached after the quote date. A first new-loan statement might include financed charges. These are different issues and should be reconciled separately before assuming the transfer is complete.

Your next-step checklist

  • Obtain the final old-account status
  • Match the new opening principal to disbursal details
  • Track unresolved differences until acknowledged

Should I destroy the old loan documents immediately?

Keep a secure record of the agreement, closure evidence and relevant statements. They can help explain later reporting or payment discrepancies without relying on memory.
