Seasonal business loans: plan repayments for the quiet months
A business with a strong festival or peak season may still struggle with equal repayments during quieter months. Review a full operating cycle before using the best month's receipts to justify borrowing.

Forecast through the low season
List monthly collections, operating costs, owner withdrawals and existing debt for at least one representative cycle. Keep one-off peak events separate from repeatable trading. Ask which repayment structures the lender can actually offer and compare their full cost. Do not assume a flexible schedule is available until it appears in the proposal. A business reserve should be considered alongside the loan rather than spent entirely upfront.
A worked situation
A retailer collecting ₹8 lakh in a peak month and ₹2 lakh in a quiet month does not have ₹8 lakh of dependable monthly repayment capacity. Average income can also hide the month in which wages, rent and an EMI fall due together.
Your next-step checklist
- Forecast peak and quiet periods separately
- Identify the lowest expected cash balance
- Check the offered repayment dates against that forecast
Should I use the peak month as my loan-income figure?
Explain the seasonal pattern and follow the lender's requested method. Presenting an exceptional month as normal income can misstate the business's repayment position.
