Unexpected collection calls: verify the account and keep a record

An unexpected repayment call should be checked against an actual account and authorised communication channel. Verify the debt and caller's role before disclosing personal information or sending a payment.

Keep verification separate from payment

Ask for the lender name, loan reference and official route for checking the request. Independently contact the lender using verified details. Preserve call times, messages and the substance of any disputed demand. If you recognise a repayment difficulty, discuss it through the lender's official process rather than making promises to an unverified caller. Report threats, suspected impersonation or inappropriate conduct through the appropriate official channels.

A worked situation

A caller naming an app you once used may still quote an incorrect balance or recipient. Match the demand to your statement and verify the authorised payment instructions. Familiar personal information alone does not prove the caller is legitimate.

Your next-step checklist

  • Verify the account and servicing authority
  • Use independently confirmed payment instructions
  • Record and report disputed conduct factually

Should I share an OTP to help a caller find my loan?

Do not disclose authentication codes or banking passwords to callers. Use a verified official process to establish the account and resolve the issue without handing over access credentials.
